About the Destination

Nuwara Eliya is where Sri Lanka surprises even well-travelled visitors. The cool air, English roses growing beside tropical ferns, and the extraordinary green geometry of the tea terraces make this one of the island's most unexpectedly beautiful destinations. It is also the gateway to Horton Plains National Park and the famous World's End cliff.
Why Visit Nuwara Eliya:
• Tea factory visits — see Ceylon tea made from leaf to cup on a working estate
• Hakgala Botanical Garden — established 1861, one of Asia's finest highland gardens
• Gregory Lake — peaceful lakeside walks and rowboating surrounded by hills
• Gateway to Horton Plains — trekking to World's End, one of Sri Lanka's great hikes
Nuwara Eliya features in our 5-Day Classic, 9-Day Adventure, 12-Day Complete and 14-Day Grand Tour packages, forming the centrepiece of the scenic highland section of all itineraries.

Why visit this destination

Little England in the tropics — Ceylon tea, colonial architecture and cool mountain air.
Nuwara Eliya sits at nearly 2,000 metres in Sri Lanka's central highlands and feels entirely unlike anywhere else on the island. Nicknamed 'Little England' by British colonial planters who built it as a retreat from the tropical heat, the town retains its colonial character — Victorian bungalows, a golf course, horse racing track, and manicured gardens — all set against a backdrop of rolling tea estates and misty mountain peaks.
The surrounding landscape is one of Sri Lanka's most visually stunning — endless green hills terraced with tea bushes, silver waterfalls tumbling through forests, and the beautiful Hakgala Botanical Garden, established in 1861. A visit to a working tea factory offers an insight into how the world's most famous tea is grown, processed and graded — from leaf to cup — on the very estates that made Ceylon tea a global name.
