Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, this ancient rock fortress features palace ruins, terraced gardens, and world-famous frescoes painted on the sheer face of the rock. The surrounding region — known as the Cultural Triangle — is home to the cave temples of Dambulla, the ancient kingdoms of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, and Minneriya National Park, famous for the legendary elephant gathering.
